Throughout the school year, volunteers work together to organize fun events, keep communications flowing, thank our teachers, and raise money for the PTA through fundraisers.  To get involved or to find out more information about a committee you may be interested in, contact Scott Cadle.

Fostering Community

Dine-Outs: Michelle Alonso & Katie Brown

What is it? Several times a year, restaurants will hold a Stenwood Night where a percentage of sales are donated to the PTA. Chairperson Role: Arranges dinners at area restaurants willing to give Stenwood a percentage of proceeds. Sends out e-flyers with information 1-2 weeks before dine-out. Time: 2-3 hours per month.

Family Fun Night: Jen McCullen (for all students, but a 6th grade fundraiser this year) 

What is it? In late winter the PTA hosts a great bingo night with a prize table, snacks, and more. Chairperson Role: Plans bingo event held in March.  Arranges for a bingo caller, purchase/donation of raffle prizes, snacks and beverages (with assistance from Hospitality committee) and bingo cards. Sends out e-flyers. Time: 5- 10 hours per month from December through February. Volunteers: 6 or 7 people help chairperson set up prize table, bingo tables, food area, etc help with food sales; then also help with clean up at the end.


Flip Flop Hop: Isabella Lawen

What is it?  A dance held in June, with a tropical theme - HUGE hit with the kids. Chairperson Role: Send e-flyers, solicit volunteers, contract with our DJ, re-use existing decorations, purchase some new decorations and props, purchase snacks and beverages (with help from Hospitality committee). Time: 5-10 hours per month in May and June. Volunteers: 8 or so people help chairperson set up cafeteria for the party, decorate, sell food and beverages, then clean up at the end.

Ice Cream Social: Karen Miller

What is it? The first PTA function of the year where families get together to make their own ice cream sundaes...many teachers and staff attend as well.  Chairperson: Send out e-flyers and print flyers, solicit volunteers, purchase ice cream, toppings, bowls, spoons, etc; coordinate with kitchen staff, set up tables and sundae area.   Time: 8 hours in September.  Volunteers: 8-10 volunteers help chairperson set up, scoop ice cream, serve bowls, monitor serving tables, and then clean up.


FCPS Parent Liasion: OPEN

What is it?  One person (or two co-chairs) generally serves as a "go to" contact to help Stenwood parents effectively communciate with the Fairfax County Public School system.  .Chairperson: Communicate with FCPS staff as necessary, send out e-flyers near start of school, be available for Stenwood parents who need advice on whom to contact in FCPS for specific issues.


Marshall Pyramid - Kilmer Parent Liasion: OPEN

What is it?  One person generally serves as a "go to" contact to keep the Stenwood community in touch with the Kilmer Middle School activities, news, etc. Chairperson: Communicate with Kilmer staff as necessary and be available to Stenwood parents who may need advice on whom to contact in Kilmer for specific issues.

Marshall Pyramid - Thoreau Parent Liasion: OPEN

What is it?  One person generally serves as a "go to" contact to keep the Stenwood community in touch with the Thoreau Middle School activities, news, etc. Chairperson: Communicate with Thoreau staff as necessary and be available to Stenwood parents who may need advice on whom to contact in Thoreaufor specific issues.

Marshall Pyramid - Marshall Parent Liasion: OPEN

What is it?  One person generally serves as a "go to" contact to keep the Stenwood community in touch with the Marshall High School activities, news, etc. Chairperson: Communicate with Marshall staff as necessary and be available to Stenwood parents who may need advice on whom to contact in Marshall for specific issues.

Special Education Liasion: OPEN

What is it?  One person generally serves as a "go to" contact for Stenwood parents with questions or concerns regarding special education issues, both in general and specific to FCPS. Chairperson: Communicate wtih FCPS staff as necessary and be available to guide parents to appropriate resources regarding special education.

New Family Welcome: Naina Chernoff

What is it?  A committee that serves to welcome parents and families that are new to Stenwood.  Chairperson: Coordinates and publicizes the new family welcome coffee held in the fall, organizes kindergarten play dates, and distributes information on the Stenwood PTA community.  Volunteers: Volunteers needed to help organize and run the kindergarten play dates, prepare packets of information, and serve as resources for parents new to the Steenwood Community.

Sixth Grade Celebration: Jen McCullen

What is it?  Each year the sixth grade class conducts separate fundraising activities to generate enough money to hold their own REALLY COOL end-of-year celebration near the end of school. Chairperson: Conduct fundraising activities (bake sales, flamingo flocking) with help of 6th grade parents; coordinate with PTA Board for funds earned; organize planning committee; conduct meetings with that committee; delegate committee chairs and responsibilities; help decorate for party; help monitor party; help clean up after.  Time: Various hours throughout the school year, wtih most work falling April through June. Volunteers: No less than 10 sixth grade parents help by chairing committees such as decorations, invitation, t-shirts, class gift, slide show, etc.

Stinger PTA Directory: Kristen Krisko

Chairperson coordinates and manages the design, production, printing and distribution of the Stenwood PTA Directory containing contact information for those Stenwood families that have opted to be included in the directory.  One or two volunteers are generally needed to assist.


Stinger PTA Website: Content Management: Kevin McShane; Development/Webmaster: OPEN

What is it?  One person serves as the content manager of the PTA website, coordinating with all other PTA committee members and volunteers as needed.  A development/webmaster is also required to manage the PTA website.


Wednesday Mail: Lorenne Schlaffer

What is it?  Wednesday Mail is the PTA's weekly delivery of information on events and activities using the "Just Between Friends."
