THE FOLLOWING TEXT IS ONLY REGARDING IN-PROGRESS SCHOOL-YEAR FLEX PROGRAMS, NOT SUMMER
The Stenwood PTA, in conjunction with Fairfax County Public Schools Adult and Community Education, is proud to introduce the Foreign Language Experience (FLEX) program.
Children who enroll in the FLEX language program will receive an introduction to the SPANISH language and culture. Using their senses, students will learn through dialogues, commands, pictures, stories, songs, games and foods of Spanish-speaking countries. Due to the time limitations and the nature of the program, please do not expect fluency. Students will not receive grades. Instructors will send home a progress report at the end of the course.
Typical Courses in the Beginning Curriculum
- Introductory social dialogue - Weather/climate, seasons, calendar
- Colors, numbers - Family
- Animals - Clothing
- Foods - Basic national culture, map, flag, landmarks
- Parts of the body - Songs, art, holiday customs
- Classroom objects
We are offering Level One Classes at this time, directly after school at Stenwood. Fall classes are already underway, and registration for Winter 2012 is underway as of November 16 (see form at right). DEADLINE for registration is December 1, 2011. Classes will run for 15 weeks, starting as shown below.
- Grades K-2 – Thursdays, 3:15-4:15, beginning January 12, 2012
- Grades 3-6 – Fridays, 3:15-4:15, beginning January 13, 2012
Instructors are employed by Fairfax County Public Schools Adult and Community Education. Instructors utilize the FLEX curriculum guide and program teaching materials. They are required to attend an orientation session, and additional training is provided annually.
Parents must provide after-school transportation arrangements. Students are not permitted to walk home. Students must be picked up promptly at the end of class. Repeated situations where a child is not picked up on time will result in the child being withdrawn from the program.
REGISTRATION – SEE FORM: (Classes will be confirmed if a minimum of 8 children are enrolled)
Your PTA representative (Emily Korff) will send a confirmation with the start date, location, and time of each class for those enrolling.
